Vale Béla Tarr

I’ve stopped paying tribute to (most) great artists when they pass because it’s happening too often and other people do it better. But seeing as I have this pre-prepared…

I posted this (god) eight years ago with zero explanation, where it was met with rapturous silence. Whatever obscure context existed back then has now been positively lost to time, so maybe it’s time to finally provide some.

A little over a decade ago, one of John Boyega’s friends filmed him watching the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer for the first time. That made sense. He was in it.

Then, a couple of years later, some weirdo edited so it looked like he was watching the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, which at least one outlet breathlessly reported as real.

That inspired me to apply the power of the Boyega React for good, and I made my own version: one in which John Boyega watches the trailer for the last ever film by Hungary’s greatest minimalist auteur, and reacts with appropriate enthusiasm. Sadly, no outlets fell for this one despite all my press releases.

Sorry, Béla, I tried.
